There have been a number of changes to the coaching team at Henley in preparation for the National 2 South 2021/22 season.
Sadly, Tom Gardner has taken the decision to step down from his position as Lead Coach because of work commitments. Tom has been instrumental in Henley’s success in recent years just missing out on promotion to National 1 on two occasions. As an ex-Hawk himself, he really made his mark in recent years as the club’s lead coach and will be very much missed by us all. Reflecting on his time at Henley, Tom commented,
“Playing for the club was always intermittent due to my employment within the Royal Air Force, however, the club always appreciated that my profession came first, which sadly is once again the case. Unfortunately, I will be stepping back from my current commitments at Henley RFC. I would also like to thank all of those who I’ve worked with over the years both as a player and a coach, including former Hawks Head coach, Pete Davies and more recently Head Coach, Luke Allen. Learning from each other, having the same goals, whilst also having our own unique qualities that complement each other. Special mentions must go to Andy Jones, Al Awcock, Tommy Haynes, Aubrey Doran, the Friday club and most importantly Nige who has put massive faith and trust into a young and ambitious coaching team”.
We wish Tom well as his career develops in the knowledge that he will not be a stranger at Henley, and will continue to visit whenever he can. The whole club thanks him for his tremendous commitment and loyalty.
It is with pleasure that we welcome John Lacey to the team. An experienced level 4 rugby coach and former Academy manager at Ealing Trailfinders, John says “I’m really excited to be given the opportunity to join the club and it is a great chance to step up into the National leagues. Having spoken with Luke and Nigel about the clubs ambitions, I can’t wait to get started with pre-season. I’m really looking forward to meeting the players and working with them towards a successful season.
In addition former Hawks captain and Coach, Steve Barnes will also be returning to support the Bulls alongside Tommy Haynes.
